about

Some time ago, Texas Poet Laureate Emeritus Rosemary Catacalos sent us a recording that writer/columnist Cary Clack had made in his backyard, suggesting we use it as a creative springboard. Cary had captured the performance of a mockingbird deep in the throes of song, an avian Coltrane riffing up and down the scale with a passionate profusion of licks and the dynamic rhythms of a Southern preacher. Joël was inspired to collaborate, and the result is “Testimony of a Mockingbird,” a 15-minute musical conversation where man and bird trade phrases, philosophize, sing praises and sermonize. The melodic theme is from Joël’s composition “Dreaming Truth.”

lyrics

Lyrics:

Twee, twee, twee, twee
Prrrrreet, Prrrrreet, Prrrrreet,
Thirrup, thirrup
Bedeep, bedeep, bedeep
Chee-chee, chee-chee, chee-chee
Purreedeleep, purreedeleep,
Chip chip chip chip chip
Phee-toe, phee-toe, phee-toe
etc.
